Gladys is survived by her daughter: Joyce (Richard) Chelmo of Detroit Lakes grandchildren: Tammy Metzinger, Natosha Hanson, Brook Chelmo, Derrick Chelmo, Trent Barden and Caryn Ranum many great-grandchildren siblings: Ray Ackerman of New York Mills and Delores (LeRoy) Bugge of Milwaukee, Wisconsin many other relatives and a host of friends. Gladys is preceded in death by her parents: Lloyd and Esther first husband: Carl Barden second husband: Kenny Bentley children: Janice Bailey Bruce Barden and Carol Barden and grandson: Craig Barden. She will be dearly missed by her family and friends. On JGladys passed away at Guardian Angels Care Center in Elk River, Minnesota at 87 years of age. She challenged gender norms in both her personal and musical style.

She loved to cook, go fishing, garden, knit and woodwork. JKnown fondly during her time as the Brown Bomber of Sophisticated Rhythm, Gladys Bentley was an openly lesbian and butch-presenting blues musician who rose to fame during the Harlem Renaissance of the 1920s and 1930s. She was united in marriage to Kenny Bentley. She was employed at Mack’s Bar, Red Fox, VFW, and Eagles Café over the years. In 1951, Gladys was united in marriage to Carl Barden until his death in 1984. She attended New York Mills High School through the 8th grade. Gladys Lovera Ackerman was born on Mato Lloyd and Esther (Eggert) Ackerman in Parkers Prairie, Minnesota.
